Here is the scoop...
Kyle and I traveled to Salida on May 8th. Our
first time was a couple weeks after we started dating in July of 2007
and we wanted to make sure to go again when we knew there would still
be water there. The first time we went I was really hoping for a first kiss and it didn't happen :( This time I was hoping for a bigger surprise and here is the story...
We decided to go super early like we did last
time to see the sunrise and hopefully have the park to ourselves as
individuals start coming when the water is warmer later in the day. We
headed out at 4:30am and began our 1.5 hour drive. The moon was almost
full and was lighting up the sky. The entire way down it was still
setting to our right and the sky was getting lighter to the left. All
of the sudden in front of us a huge shooting star shot across the sky.
It was breath taking. We traveled a bit further and an antelope crossed
the road in front of us which was amazing to see. We finally got
to the Sand Dunes and began our trek. We had to cross the water first
which was freezing cold on our bare feet yet it was worth it. We hiked
up watching the sun start to peep across the mountains and shine on the
Dunes. It is pretty surreal being in such an amazing National Monument
all by ourselves. The sky was clear, weather was amazing and it was a
perfect morning.
Some parts were very steep and it was quite the workout. Not to mention, Kyle had a huge cast on his hand from surgery days before.
We reached the highest one we could find. I sat and took a break to catch my breath and Kyle found some amazing
ripples in the sand to take photos of and I watched as he captured some
amazing views. He turned to me to ask if I was doing ok and I said yes
and that I was just a bit exhausted. He came back towards me and
kneeled down and began rummaging through his camera bag. I figured he
was getting a different camera since he has three to choose from. All
of the sudden Kyle turned to me and said "Muffin, will you marry me!"
and he pulled out a ring.!!!!! I was so excited and it took me a few
minutes and tears of happiness to get out my response of "Yes, I will
marry you."
We
continued on to follow our tradition of running down the steep sections
on our way back to the water. It is so fun and makes you feel like a
kid again.
